No harm in giving it a try. If it works it's good or else explore other 
options. I know renaming the file to wmv does not change the elements of the 
file, but as per my experience I've been able to play many movie CDs following 
this procedure.

imran, due to matching of codecs they are played.  renaming those files does 
not make any sense.  Yu know another funny thing? even if you rename it in to 
.avi it will be played in to the winamp.  audio and video codecs are different. 
 Usually those .dat files are arranged in the VCD where VCD_play.exe file shall 
be executed.  those .dat files are located in your vcd\mpeg\.  if you want to 
copy them in to your harddisk obviously you need to copy that mpeg folder 
rather copying whole ☺!
