I've looked at this transition myself, but have avoided it because
other issues always seem to take precedent.

If you plan on using a 3rd party host for this, you have to get one
that supports mod_rewrite. If you want the rewrite to appear
transparent to the user, then you also have to have mod_proxy enabled
on the server. This is where the problem generally lies.

While most 3rd party shared web hosts will give you mod_rewrite
capabilities in the .htaccess file, they generally don't allow the use
of mod_proxy or the proxy flag with mod_rewrite.

I've found that if you to use mod_proxy you would most likely have to
look at either a virtual dedicated server or a dedicated server, where
you have more access to the underlying server.

As for SSL, most web hosts will use also used shared certificates
unless you get into a virtual or dedicated server.

I'd also like to hear others opinions on this, so will be following
this thread with some interest.
