We're using a little system that I put together a few years ago that started with some scripts and wmi queries. Now its a full asset, patch management, and inventory tool that we can use to pull up almost any info about any machine. Basically its got a SQL database, a webserver, bunch of xml docs that the client pulls down, interrogates, then uploads its data via a component installed on each machine at build. Runs over a single port, gets proxied over all our firewalls with SSL, has self healing and local parent discovery. We couldn't live without it these days.
