Here at RIC, we don't have a written policy on providing administrative access
to employees, but if folks petition for it, we will generally provide the
access.

On a slightly different note but not entirely unrelated to this topic....does
anyone have a policy on account provisions that could be sent? I'm
specifically interested in policies regarding setting up e-mail and computing
accounts for new employees and terminating accounts once employees leave.
Thanks!

John:

Although we're not all the way there, Ohio State is moving toward the same
practice as Cornell. For those of us who used to be able to download anything,
it is taking a bit of time to get used to it, but we're adjusting and coming to
understand the security issues...

Hi, John,

I am fairly certain that, with few exceptions, Cornell does not grant
administrative computer access to employees. In addition, staff computers are
"locked down," so no application can be downloaded or upgraded without central
IT authorization through a central "software update center." Updates are pushed
out from our central IT service group.

We are evaluating our current practices in regard to granting Administrative
Access to employee computers. Currently, we do not allow Administrative Access
but allow a few exceptions. I am interested in finding out about relevant
policies at other institutions. I am especially interested in policies that
specifically allow Administrative Access for faculty.

Thank you.
