Hello, Emily - Thanks for the question. While we are still in the process of updating hundreds of policies dated 1998, we did manage to process a new lactation policy a couple of years ago. It was enthusiastically championed on our campus by the manager of the nursing education office. She wanted our facilities to receive a statewide "Mother-Friendly" designation, so that we could recruit more nurses, and to do that, we had to have a policy. She pushed it through and we are proud to have it. We see providing workplace support of lactation as a non-discrimination issue, and we have put the policy in our Ethics, Compliance, and Standards of Behavior chapter. So, technically, the policy's executive sponsor is the VP of the Office of Diversity and Inclusion & Equal Opportunity. However, the rooms are maintained by the units where they are located. Good luck with this initiative! Christine * * *

If your institution has a lactation support policy, we would appreciate some feedback on a few points: * What area of the institution is responsible for the policy, including development, compliance and maintenance? I can see a case for either Human Resources or Access and Equity, and I'd like to know where others see it fitting best. Or some other area? * Is lactation support considered a benefit, an accommodation or something else in terms of how it is addressed in your policy? * What are the repercussions to a supervisor for not complying with the policy? Is it considered a disciplinary issue or a matter of discrimination? Thanks in advance for your thoughts on this, Emily Wood ATTN: Please be aware that when you respond to an ACUPA-L e-mail, the reply will be distributed to the ENTIRE list of members.
