Hello, Leah, We do not have any formal policies, perhaps because we're "all over the map" here at Cornell (being as diverse as we are).
Some of our programs manage their budgets separately, and they might rent out space to the public. For instance, our hotel school manages a top-notch hotel, which is open to the public and rents the ballroom and other event rooms all the time. Also, our Johnson Graduate School of Management has a fairly recently-built, very expensive building, and they are always renting out space, with the goal of recovering some of the cost of the building. Similarly, we have chapels and natural spaces on our campus, many of which are very popular for weddings. Some have a rental fee, and some simply require a reservation, I believe. some are simply open to the public, on a first-come, first-served basis. The closest thing we have to a policy in this area is our alcohol policy, which has regulations about registering events on campus. It is here: https://www.dfa.cornell.edu/sites/default/files/policy/vol4_8.pdf. We are working on a "space rental" policy, of sorts, but that would simply set minimum and/or maximum fees, and define the committees that approve or review requests to rent out space. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful. Good luck! Our current policy states that weddings are prohibited on campus and a task force is being formed to look into changing that policy. Any thoughts or advice on how to proceed would be welcome. Thank you.
