Shanea,

Welcome to the group!

Similar to many other responses, Cornell has a set review period or university
policies; here it is five years. As Michele mentions, some VPs are better than
others at conducting review of their policies, and the policy office really
doesn't have the authority to force anyone to do anything (especially not VPs).

What I will add is that I consider it my responsibility to personally contact
the offices with responsibility for policies and remind them of expected
reviews. I never do this in an authoritarian way, but instead try to "sell the
idea." After all, it is in the best interest of the policy owner to have
complete and up-to-date information; it won't reflect badly on the policy
office, but the VP with responsibility for the policy, if a reader is misguided
by the policy or clicks on a dead link.

Although the model is different at many institutions (perhaps where the policy
function is mandated at a high and very visible level), at Cornell it's all
about customer service: my office is here to help members of the community
develop, promulgate, revise, and navigate university policies. We are more
consultants than anything else. Along the way, we can influence policy owners
by pointing out why they could and should take advantage of our services. But
beyond that, we don't have much power.

Josh

Subject: [acupa-l] Policy Process and Review

Hello! I've just joined the group on behalf of Gonzaga University and I'm
looking forward to collective insight on so many aspects of policy!

Initially, I would love to have samples of a review process and a schedule for
existing policies. A second question for the group would be if you have a
specific entity on campus that is tasked with identifying policy gaps (either
vulnerability or cultural).

Thank you for your consideration!
