the tape it uses is a hi8 MP tape.
is this clear enough?
there is no output to it that can be plugged into a computer.
there is only a tv output, and the way i think im going to get it 
into my comp is by recording the footage onto dvd. then rip it with a 
program on my comp, and convert it to avi footage.
 
There are other ways, but they would entail a converter called the Canopus
ADVC-100.
That will give you a FireWire output for your computer and you will be able
to capture direct to DV-AVI
and you can skip the extra step of capping to DVD which will introduce more
noise and artifacting.
 
The ADVC-100 will convert ANY analog video source to FireWire and also
convert BACK in the other direction too. 
Please dont take it the wrong way if I tell you that you need to bone up
seriously on some of the tech stuff before diving
into this.
