Everyone- I just stumbled upon a pretty good description of pixel aspect ratio (my little pet peeve) that some of you may want to check out if it is still not quite totally clear. It is from Microsoft no less!
Check out "What are Nonsquare Pixels?" <http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/knowledgecenter/wminaction/codecs.aspx> I had always wanted to do a "live tutorial" like this about pixel aspect because no matter how detailed you write a document or web page, it still does not "click" in people's head right away. The only issue I have with David Workman's description is when he talks about how anamorphic widescreen is displayed on a computer. He describes it as reducing the vertical resolution to 360 line and then cutting off the "black bars". I think it was more of an over sight in his description, but it may confuse some people. It may also be a fact that some DVD software actually does this. What you really want is for the image to be stretched left to right and maintain the 480 pixels top to bottom. The image is going to be stretched anyway to fit the computer display. The "Setting Up and Encoding Content" is also interesting. I wish I had that much time to encode video ;) Enjoy! -Jeremy A Moore Yahoo!
