Try using the Shadow/Highlight effect (under the effect/adjust settings in Premiere Pro) to brighten it up. It seems to work wonders at keeping detail and brightening the dark areas. I guess it depends on how dark your footage is. If it is really dark, you may get some noise trying to correct it, but Premiere should allow you to tweak it to death using all the diffent effects and color correction tools.
