In PPro 2.0 there is a "Dip to Black" dissolve that should be good

Otherwise, I have been doing the same thing you do if I want to fade completely 
to white and then back to second clip. I create a White Color Matt and dissolve 
back and forth

Btw, if you create a "Black Color Matt", it render faster than "Black Video"
