In my experience, working with two drives in addition to your OS drive is
sufficient for most of us using up to date systems. I have a second
internal and two external (LaCie firewire 400) drives on a core 2 PC at the
moment, and previously ran the same drive set up on a P4 1.8 GHz system.
Anyone whose business is busy enough to require every second available can
afford to run leading edge hardware, but if that isn't your situation, keep
media files off your OS drive and render and export from a drive two to a
drive three and you'll be happy with the performance. Of course, defragging
and watching your free space remains important but that's entry level stuff.
