Sorry about jumping into this conversation late, but thought I'd throw my 2
cents in. Alan said an internal drive is going to be best, but there are many
people using external drives as their scratch discs with no issues at all. You
definitely want to use a different drive than the one your operating system is
on, but if you are still having performance issues after separating things out,
you probably have some other issues with the system.
