I use two LaCie 2 terabyte drives with the triple interface (usb, firewireA
and firewireB(800)). I originally tried using these with the built-in
firewireA(400) on the computer. It would work fine until I would capture
some video on firewire. Then the drives would drop out.
The problem is that microsoft has a generic crippled driver for firewireA
built in to its the XP code. (This crippled, reduced speed driver is
documented on the mircosoft web site). When you use a drive and a video on
the same driver the computer can't distinguish which is which. They did this
so you wouldn't have to use outside drivers and could just plug right in.
The solution some have used is to use a third party driver that patches the
microsoft code out of the system and wedges itself in. You get a speed
increase but there is still som conflicts with some drives.
When you put in a firewireB(800) card, it has to use it's own driver which
in most cases built into the card itself. This gives you a tremendous speed
increase, and you can dedicate the old firewireA just for digital video.
The firewireB standard is such that the 800 figure is very conservative.
Usually you can get around 1 Gig. In fact in any practical situation you
should have better throughput than a 1Gig ethernet connection.
Nobody seems to have the firewire cards in the stores but I ordered mine
through Staples on-line. It worked so well that I got a card for my laptop
too, this time from CompUSA because thiers was cheaper at that time.
