Desires can only breed more desires. It is useless to fulfil your desires because it is like adding fuel to the fire. Desires are the root cause of all suffering.
I only said desires are good because it builds up a huge ego which is sometimes a good thing for enlightenment. A very huge ego can easily get enlightened if you don't have a guru to guide you - because it is a crash and burn method. One who is with a guru can take the easier way because they guru can show you when you make mistakes. But an egoistic person will make mistakes and learn and his path will be one of suffering - life will be his guru. Repression of the senses is a totally bullshit idea. The senses do not need anything. They are just instruments. It is the person inside who feels that there is a basic requirement for sensory enjoyment. There is nothing like that. A man can be celibate, non-smoking, non-drinking and good natured and still live a normal life. Senses are like the five horses of a charioteer. The soul is the one who holds the reins of the horses. The horses cannot go around on their own seperate ways. They all have to coordinate and help the soul to move ahead. Basically there are two ways - yoga or bhoga. A yogi restrains his senses. A bhogi experiences everything and learns through that. The end result will be the same.
