I wouldn't choose perl for Apache, but that has nothing to do with the
number of contributors or lines of code, but because of how it works and
what it does. Same thing with GIMP, probably.

Yes, that type of thing can be a problem. I think the positives outweigh
the negatives.

Because I think the mentality of those who choose Java and Microsoft over
Perl and Linux is often very much tied to such interests. I could be wrong.
