Ironically, I am having this exact conversation with my
contract-client-manager. They are concerned about what not finding
someone who can support the following simple things once I leave:
- 5.6.x on HP-UX 11.x
- latest versions of DBI and DBD::Oracle (Oracle 8.x.x)
- Net::* and LWP modules
(we currently have to install gcc or HP ANSI-C, then compile perl
and then compile the above modules)
And thats not much to ask for. Seems like HP is developing all of the
above but they can't distribute because of Oracle licensining problems.
Now, my organization has a huge enterprise licensing deal with Oracle so
we have all the necessary licenses. So, if only someone could talk to
Oracle and tell them that merely allowing compiled re-distribution of
DBD::Oracle modules in no-way compromises any of their (twisted notions)
of IP.
I know this has been discussed on the perl6 mailing lists, but we
desperately need some community liasons for the major perl ports that can
serve as the singly point of information and communication for
enterprises.
One needs to remember that the perl needs in the enterprise are
beyond the GNU/Linux and Win XX platforms.
Basically what I am saying is that we need ActiveStates for every major
platform *hint* *hint* :)
