I was not going to contribute more to this thread; but I figured
that I would get a reply like the above and now I can't resist.
I don't get that argument at all. Maybe I'm just spoiled, but I
have never worked in a place or had a customer who thought like
that. Everywhere I've been "folks with dollars" have left the
technical decisions to the people with technical knowledge.
By far most stories I've heard about bad technical decisions have
been made by incompetent technical people.
If "management" "micromanage" on technical solutions; then all the
clued people are most likely running away screaming if they didn't
already leave and then it's game over anyway[1].
I am increasingly convinced that we'll never make any significant
progress (for whatever values of that) by "advocating to the
managers" as a community.
I am increasingly convinced that we can make great progress (for
whatever values of that) as a community by helping more people learn
to program with Perl, enjoy using Perl and be productive in Perl.
