Conger and Brady have raised some interesting issues here -- but what about
the original topic of this thread ?

1. Are there currently way more well-known and prestigious prizes in
Literature and Music than in the visual arts ?

2.If so -- why ?

As I've attempted to point out -- this disparity does not hold as we look back
further into history -- so an explanation would have to venture into cultural
history. (which I've begun to explain as the hegemony of ideology -- although
I still puzzling why it hit the visual arts more than the others)

And if we should avoid conflating excellence and achievement-- would that
equally hold for all the arts -- even the applied or mechanical arts -- as
well ?
