Justice Antonin Scalia was on Charlie Rose last night. To me, he emanates a
chilly self-affirmation. He's particularly scornfully of other justices who do
not share his view of sticking to "THE meaning of" the original constitution.
I realize what a nuisance my preachings about language are to many listers,
but I maintain they have merit even beyond the confines of our forum. When I
see Scalia's damaging brand of conservatism, which he justifies by claiming he
is only adhering to a non-existent "THE meaning of" the words of the Founding
Fathers, I groan.
