One does not have to live in china, in the USA, the meaning of the
law has been applied differently to different people from day one,
and still is.

Yes, the rule of law is a fiction -- but if you want to know what
it's like in
a place it's not believed, talk with people who grew up in China.
It's a place somewhat like this listserv -- where those who have
power can
remove whomever they want for whatever reasons they wish.

Justice Antonin Scalia was on Charlie Rose last night. To me, he
emanates a
chilly self-affirmation. He's particularly scornfully of other
justices who
do
not share his view of sticking to "THE meaning of" the original
constitution.
I realize what a nuisance my preachings about language are to many
listers,
but I maintain they have merit even beyond the confines of our
forum. When I
see Scalia's damaging brand of conservatism, which he justifies by
claiming
he
is only adhering to a non-existent "THE meaning of" the words of
the Founding
Fathers, I groan.
