I don't see how the rule of law can proceed without someone being delegated to
determine "THE meaning of" each of them.

Yes, the rule of law is a fiction -- but if you want to know what it's like in
a place it's not believed, talk with people who grew up in China.

It's a place somewhat like this listserv -- where those who have power can
remove whomever they want for whatever reasons they wish.

Justice Antonin Scalia was on Charlie Rose last night. To me, he emanates a
chilly self-affirmation. He's particularly scornfully of other justices who
do
not share his view of sticking to "THE meaning of" the original constitution.

I realize what a nuisance my preachings about language are to many listers,
but I maintain they have merit even beyond the confines of our forum. When I
see Scalia's damaging brand of conservatism, which he justifies by claiming
he
is only adhering to a non-existent "THE meaning of" the words of the Founding
Fathers, I groan.
