How strange.

Didn't William recently post something about Miller growing hair on his palms
and wanting to become a cultural gate-keeper ? And now -- that entire post
seems to have disappeared.

Is there a glitch in cyberspace ?

In response -- it's true that Miller loves being a gatekeeper -- but only in a
community where everyone gets to have their own gate: i.e. the internet (
though even there -- I have some uncomfortable moments. How can I refuse a
friend who wants to be on my site ? How can I refuse anyone who really wants
to be there -- or who has something valuable to exchange in return ?)

And also -- I like to join all the other members of my art club in voting for
the winners at my art club's annual "Gold Medal Show". It's a funny thing
about that show -- in that as eccentric as my tastes may be -- usually my
preferences are the same as everyone else's -- and the people who win
sometimes have the most thoroughly unlikable personalities.

Of course our shows include a very narrow range of artistic production -- but
is it really possible to sensibly judge within a much broader range -- if you
agree with William that "subjectivity is the valued sensibility in responding
to art, or even judging it" ?

Once you step outside of subjectivity -- I would have to agree with Kate that
there is "no sensibility involved at all, only resignation to the inevitable."
William has then suggested that "the best situation is when the work creates
the taste and not the other way around." --- but really --- isn't this a
process that takes repeated experiences
over weeks-months-years ---- not just the 20 minutes spent viewing a show or
listening to new music?

What I'm suggesting -- is that regardless of some idealistic ideologies --
sensibility can only operate within a narrow range -- and cultural
institutions should be structured to accommodate that.
