I think it's fine to promote your own taste. But do your choices match those
of the mainstream? I've always agreed with the view that all options (all
styles and tastes) are always present and competing for mainstream attention.
However, certain social/art forces are also always dominant and will run their
courses. The question is how relevant are they to the social/art reality --as
examined by other means-- and how well do they counter the claims of those
other options? There is a personal taste and a "historical" taste always in
some dialectical or even paradoxical relationship. In today's art scene, the
personal is out, the historical dialectic is in.

With the growing influence of the "flat world" of wireless technology it seems
that more and more value is given to the artificial sharing of global
"discourse" and less and less to the actual sharing of lived experience. In
art this seems to be augmenting idea art, conceptual and purely stylistic
trends that don't require any personal taste or sharing of lived experience in
terms of place and context. Thus the kind of art and taste that is "out" is
that which relies on the individual experience. This alienation of lived
experience has distanced art from actuality and has replaced it with the
mediated world of "global" imagery. The end result is the domination of truly
dehumanized art...indistinguishable in content and appeal from brand-name
consumer products.
