But then -- how could we accept Hogarth's opinion of "who were the best judges of it" -- when Hogarth himself was a painter ? If you visit some of the on-line painting or sculpture forums -- the denizens do seem to be attached to specific techniques/effects -- and oblivious to anything else that might be seen. Perhaps those are the kind of poor judges that Hogarth had in mind? In olden days the amateur aesthete was king (and vice-versa) -- but now in our democratic era, the buyer and artist are given much higher status.
