So even if the artist feels that her finished work is "inevitable and resolved", another observer, absent an artist's need for self congratulation, might feel quite differently. I have a great need to get that feeling from a painting or statue -- the delight being that it can be delivered in so many ways, each of which feels like an unexpected, happy surprise regardless of how familiar all the elements of style may be.
