Typical of Miller to reserve for himself the passive expectation that art will
speak to him, as it were, without any effort on his part. No learning, no
asking whether his frustration and disappointment in the experience of art
might simply be his own. I've said it before again and again, if you want a
big drink, bring a big cup. On the other hand, few artworks can evoke a
fulsome response from a large, varied audience. Artworks that do are mostly
hidden by a thick cloak of societal approbation so that any response or
aesthetic judgment is more about reverential identification with that
approbation than about the art itself. Genuinely good art is demanding and
even arrogant. Like an auger it can dig into one's psyche and spill the spirit
as though it were guts and blood. It can be confusing and paradoxical, seeming
to soothe and offer a hand in respect when in fact it aims to frighten and
dares one to stand and confront the challenge. When you
encounter a good work of art you are being asked if you are equal to it.

I don't think the same pleasure one gets from one's completed work can not
be felt the same in anyone else, and should not expected to be.
