My point is that when music takes music as its subject it generates primarily formalist content that is the meaning, message or sense (reason) associated with its forms, formats and disposition , as well as a full range of other contents - as such we should be talking about forms and contents of a work of art

It seems an all too common practice on this list for people to respond to discussion either without engaging with the discussion. I made a point of suggesting that music can be its own subject and content; that music can explore music. I did not say but could have said that the sound world is another part of our sensual environment that we engage with; music is one way of engaging with the sound world and the world of sound. (I think a try to state something of that in my first reply to this theme.) So, when I reply I attempt to engage with what I am replying to and to explain why I think it is relevant. Can you tell me why you think it necessary to always necessary to send me an email through the list and also off-list? Do you think I am not reading the list emails? Or do you have an email programme that likes to multiply its replies? Toodle-pip, Allan. --
