If 'banality' is the inverse of 'profundity' this looks like it
might be an
answer to the quest -- but if familiarity with "diverse, linked
texts" is
required to impel musical interpretation, I doubt that any of us,

this semiotic model)
And yet -- many of us would still like to identify a Beethoven
symphony as
more profound and less banal than the work of Leroy Anderson.
BTW -- isn't there plenty of modern classical music that could
hardly be
called a "continuous text"? (if music could even be called a
'text' at all)
