Why use the word "text", instead of  just calling it an arrangement of
sounds?

And unless you have read the score, don't you know that music only by
performances -- each of which is different, often in very important ways?

BTW -- the difference between the score and the performance is one of the
problems I have with Kivy.

Since he only addresses the issue of the relative profundity of various
composers, perhaps he's one of the few music lovers who can experience music
by reading  scores.

But I only know music from performance, so I experience performers rather than
composers.  (for example, I find Beethoven's Fifth Symphony to be frivolous
when performed by Karajan, but profound when conducted by Carlos Kleiber)
