Exactly... And they let a lot of their old stuff just rot, because
they don't have anyone besides themselves to be beholden to. UP does
biz their way. The US Gov't can pound sand as far as UP is concerned... :)

UPRR has never cooperated with anyone. 50 years ago, Art Brothers tried
to get them to let him use their power line (top two wires on a bracket
circuit) to convey some analog telephone mux signal.
Just needed to run the signal a couple of miles so a power substation
could have a phone. Nope.

They do have a ton of different types of links, but not for a ton of
different purposes. Their links serve two purposes. PTC, and sensor
relay back to the main control hub in Omaha. Fundamentally they both are
to insure safety of cargo,train, and public.
On the subject of being picky about property they own. You have an
interesting point of view. They are a public company with shareholders.
As long as they aren't breaking any laws, I am not sure why you have an
issue with them. The management is running a railroad, not a tower
company, they are laser focused on making that RR operation safer and
more profitable. If you approached a landowner to build a tower on their
property and they said no, would you think they were assholes? If the
landowner had a ham radio tower and he didn't want you on it, regardless
if you felt the reasoning was valid, does that make him an asshole?
Robert, I get it. It is frustrating to see those beautiful, almost
empty, huge SS towers right where you need them placed smack in the
middle of population centers everywhere. I tried to get on them nearly
20 years ago and got the same story. I crawled all the way up the chain
of command to the director of communications and he gave me a polite and
detailed "NO". It was still a no. But in the end, they own them, and
they don't let anyone on them. I don't think they are singling you out.
They just don't want any non licensed gear on their tower in case they
want to use those freq's one day. They aren't hot on licensed gear
either really, because they don't want the extra hassle.
Again, the reasoning may not be valid to you or I, but in the end, the
property is theirs and they can do what they want with it. Ahhh, but so
much property. If i remember right, I think they may have said they own
more property in the US than any other landowner. I couldn't verify that
as most of the info out there seemed to focus on individual landowners.
Maybe that was historically accurate but not so now, who knows. I do
know they own a ton of land and tens of thousands of towers. It is a
shame they won't let anyone on them.

UP has a bunch of different purpose radio links out here, for much more
than just PTC. We have a few towers of theirs near town. They watch
them like hawks for unauthorized visitors.. Some of them have great
siting that many would like access to for building towers... Don't
bother asking...
