At some point I was disappointed to discover that a lot of classic rock songs
that sound great on the car radio, actually sound no better or even worse on a
good sound system. It seems like they were recorded specifically for playing
on boomboxes and AM car radios.

You know the songs I’m talking about, the ones where you crank up the volume
and pound on the steering wheel, generally 60’s and 70’s vintage.

Of course new songs are recorded with earbuds in mind, so again, may not sound
better on a good system. At least with earbuds, you don’t inflict your music
choices on passersby, unlike the cars with 1000 watt amps in the trunk and
speakers that could probably double as a propulsion system.

Excuse me now as I go out to the garage to listen to California Dreamin’. Or
maybe some Rolling Stones or Jefferson Airplane. Or the king of low-fi
recordings, Louie Louie.

Bose car audio (and home audio) is pretty terrible and far from accurate in
most cars. I just bought a new car that has Bose ‘premium’ audio, and it
sounds like absolute crap compared to my old car which had the premium HK stock
system.

... but, I’m sort of an audiophile, so most people probably won’t agree with me.

Quality sounds great to me. But of course I've had Bose audio in all the cars
with XM.

quality varies across some of the stations I've noticed, depends on what you
are listening to. talk radio is worse than some of the music channels.

We just got a new vehicle at work that includes XM radio for some period of

Anyone else who’s had experience with XM: does it always sound like it’s
compressed, digital and low fidelity? Why would anyone pay a subscription for
this when I get high-fidelity FM free?
