As others have said, the base II only supports positive voltages.

The voltmeter expansion is semi-isolated so it can measure either.

The new base III will at least be able to measure negative voltages. In
addition, it's likely that it will be able to be powered from them. Or
more accurately, there will definitely be a version which can be powered
from negative voltages. Whether or not the initial, low cost, designed as
a drop-in replacement for the existing units version will include the
negative to positive power supply needed will depend on whether I can meet
my pricing goals while still adding that functionality.

To give a bit more insight into what I'm talking about: There are a lot
of functions I want to include in the new Base III. But every one adds
cost, sometimes substantial cost. So there will be most likely two
versions of the new base unit, one which will be lower-cost and drop in for
the existing unit, and one which will be "mostly drop in" and which will
include things like higher current relays, two isolated voltmeters, etc.
