"live migration" was added in 2008.
"zero downtime live migration via ssh" was added in 1.4 in 2009
"live migration with local storage" was added in 2017.

Here's an ancient demo from 2013 of live vm migration:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QjxfFR3oSbY

A user-friendly DRS is lacking in proxmox itself, but most people who are
sophisticated enough to need this are able to roll their own quickly by
calling the API. There are also several people who have published their
implementation. I guess I might want to rephrase this: DRS in proxmox
is generally implemented by the user by using scripts or some third party
tool.

One note is that it seems like proxmox either ends up in the small cluster
role (i.e. 3-4 machines), where you can fairly easily balance things out
yourself, or in giant farms in organizations that already have a big
open-source or development culture. It seems like vmware still dominates
in that middle ground where you have enough machines where it's a pain to
keep track of everything by hand, but you don't have enough servers to want
to build your own provisioning system (or use a third party tool)
