The fact that these drug companies and investors can do this is what funds the progress. I would be satisfied with a medical patent "grandchild clause" that says something similar to you may develop a product and rape people for a generation, but after a certain period the patent becomes public domain. IE, I may die today because I cannot afford the treatment, but it will be available to cure my grandchildren. This makes the likelihood of something better coming along that will eliminate the need for the treatment because the ailment is preventable.It takes money, lots and lots of money to keep the progress moving as fast as it does.
The reality is humans are absolutely not altruistic by nature. Our base primal instinct is to survive and ensure our offspring's survival not out of love, out instinct, nothing more.
