Joseph and Mary were not refugees and were not seeking charity. They were travelers with a purpose. By all accounts of the story, the inn was full and the only place which had any shelter was the stable, most likely a dark dank cave, not a structure. Most likely they paid for that as well. Had they not, I'm guessing the owner might well have chased them off. It was a fairly brutal time in history in that part of the world. Chivalry is a fairly western construct. So, I guess you'll be giving a room to some refugees? Good for you.
