If they have tone alignment available they should be using it. I know they
will claim they can do just as good looking at the lights and having someone
read them numbers, but I can cite many reasons why they are wrong and could be
doing their job better if they used the tools available to them.

what caused tones to stop working anyway, i dont remember the history on it, i
loved them for the fsk stuff when i was installing, but new guy techs didnt
care and broke the toners all the time so i quit making them

OK, that makes sense, especially about 13.4.1 being the end of the line for FSK
and 430 AP.

I’ll have to try that on the bench. I hate over-the-air experiments that might
result in truck rolls and pissed off customers.

I have been wondering what happens if I do auto update via an AP with a mix of
430 and 450 APs, I don’t think there’s a way to specify do one and not the
other, unless it runs into no applicable update.

I have taken 430 SMs to 14.x on the bench. 11.2 > 12.1 > 13.4.1 > 14.1.2. 450,
450i and 430 *SM* uses the same package file. The various images are all rolled
together in the pxp45x pkg3's. 13.4.1 is the end of the road for the 430 *AP*.
And FSK.

There isn't a .pkg file for OFDM 430 after 13.4.1

Also it's somewhere in the release notes or user manual but it's been a while
since I've read them and I don't remember which version started talking about
it. It could have been in some of the beta release notes because we beta
tested most of the 14.x builds. Check the forums too because it might have
been discussed there as well. I'm to old to remember haha.

OK, that provides some clarity but also more confusion. Not sure I’m looking
at the same document as you, I see Introduction on page 5.

But in the 14.1.2 release notes, I see nothing about 430 at all.

In the 14.2.1 release notes, I do see a Note that 430 SMs must first go to
14.1.2 before 14.2.1, and a Note they will no longer be able to talk to a 430
AP. I am not seeing anything about having to do the upgrade over the air
(which is really strange IMHO). Are you seeing this explicitly stated in the
release notes, or inferring it from the fact that 13.4.1 is that last download
listed on the website for 430?

Software release notes for 14.2.1 in the introduction on page 3 gives the best
description. (I think it's on or near the same page with the other releases but
I'm on my phone so it's hard to scan thru them all)

The update has to be done over the air thru SMs auto update tho. You can't
upgrade a 430 SM on the bench past 13.4.1.

Do you have a link to that? I just checked and 14.1.2, 14.2.1 and 15.0 all say
450/450i/450m no mention of 430, also on the download page if you select 430
the latest FW shown is 13.4.1.

We gained a lot of stability with 14.1.2 and it would be nice if we could bring
the 430 SMs up to that. I’m not so sure about 14.2.1, and 15.0 seems to be
mostly to support 450m.

Thru auto update from the AP over the air 430 SMs can and should be brought up
to whatever firmware the AP is using.

If you need to connect the 430SM back to a 430 AP you'll need to manually
downgrade the SM to 13.4.1 tho.

It's in all the 14.x release notes.

We have changed out all our 430 Aps for 450i, but still have a bunch of 430 SMs
running in 450 compatibility mode. My techs keep telling me when they do
service calls, that alignment tone is broken on those SMs. The first time I
figured bad hardware since some roofers had bonked the dish, but as it keeps
happening, I’m realizing it must be the firmware.

I remember some FW release broke alignment tone on the 450 SMs and so we waited
until the fixed it. I don’t remember which release broke it and which release
fixed it.

But the release notes tell you that for compatibility with 450i you should have
430 SMs on 13.4.1, plus I think that’s the end of the line for 430, right? We
can’t go to 14.1.2 which is what we have on all our 450 stuff.

Does anyone know if in fact alignment tone is non functional on a 430 SM with
13.4.1?
