Thank you all for the informative replies,

To clarify, when I said:

"I feel like my studies of theism/atheism, philosophy, psychology,
politics, and the human equation have all lead me here."

I was talking about my independent exploration of these topics through
various books, videos, and online resources. So yes, I am more focused in
humanities but I'd also want to be involved at a technical level.

In high school I took two years of JAVA programming, it was both fun and
easy for me.
I was also part of the debate team and because of that I consider one of my
biggest strengths to be critical thinking and conceptual analysis.

In light of the responses I've gotten so far, here are a few questions I
have:

1. In order to contribute at a technical level to the development of AGI
would I do better getting a degree in something like Cognitive
Sciences(which includes AI in the curriculum) or a more general Computer
Science degree.

2. What is the day to day work for someone with a passion in
AGI/singularity like?

3. How involved are people with educations in Neuroscience/Neuropsychology
in this endeavor?

4. What kind of personality/strengths are ideal for a day to day AGI
developer? Are there things I should be doing right now to prepare myself?

I guess my biggest conflict here is whether I want to do scientific lab
work or programming for AGI. I'm open to both so any information from
those with experience would be appreciated.

Thanks again for your time!
