My personal theory, which you do not have to accept, is that
Ramanujan was able to train a set of neurons in his head to 
perform "long division", whereupon he could read off the answers.
If you look at all of his amazing formuls, you eventually get
the inkling that they all seem to be of the form of quotients 
of polynomial series; that they were all arrived at by factorization.
This is particularly evident for the results in modular forms
and functions.
