With the new head gaskets, I've had similar experience--until now. This
gasket was in for about 80,000 miles. I think it failed because I recently
installed a new A/C compressor. The new compressor dragged the engine down
lower than the old one until I got the FI system set up properly to deal with
it. Until I got it adjusted, the engine would sometimes get bogged down to
almost 400 rpm and vibrate very strongly. I think the strong vibration is
what killed the gasket. I'm also wondering if the gasket would have survived
if I had retorqued it when new.

You didn't mention: do you think it's better to retorque hot or cold?
