We are NOT using shims where the booster mounts to the MC. That won't work even if you wanted to do it, as it breaks the seal between the two, and vacuum matters. The shims are placed at the end of the rod coming out of the booster, effectively lengthening the rod. Hence, adding shims reduces free play. The earlier boosters on the Spider/GTV/Berlina have an acorn nut on the end of a threaded rod coming out of the booster.
