sounds a bit like a problem with a ground.you have to probe the positive
coming to the switch from the battery.when you open the switch it should give
power to a brown wire coming out of the switch.the one coming in from the
battery is red.then when the trouble occurs ,probe those wires again when
trying to start.if the red still has power ,your switch is toast.you can get
one from international or centerline or any other alfa parts dealer.call them
and tell them your model and they'll sell you the right part.

Thanks, Brian. Is there a readily available relay you could recommend? What
is
the best way to wire it in?

I don't have direct experience with any of the new switches, because I put
starter relays in all of my older Alfas.B So, whichever switch you end up
with, take the opportunity to add a starter relay while you have things
apart.
The new switch will last forever.
Some times, adding a starter relay can prolong the life of an iffy switch,
but
yours sounds pretty far gone.B Still, since you should be installing a relay
anyhow, can't hurt to do that first and see if it helps.

Subject: [alfa] Spider ignition switch
I fear a worn out ignition switch on my 75 Spider. Intermittently, there is
no power at all; occasionally, there is power to dash, fuel pump, etc., then
when starter begins to turn everything goes dead. All replacement switches
have different wiring than my car and prices range from $140 to $189
(ouch!). Anyone with experience with these replacements? Advice? BTW, new
battery and all grounds and connections are good.
Thanks in advance,
Ben
