Well, currently we always install libfreetype, but into the filter sub-directory
and create a symbolic link in program if no system libfreetype is found. But the
issues referenced here are build / testtool issues, not OOo runtime issues.

However, I checked with hr and even our baseline Linux system has a recent
enough system libfreetype. Also I've found that Solaris 9 does come with GNOME
2.0 on disk, which reduces problem a) mentioned earlier to Solaris 8.

Is anyone aware of an active OOo port that does not have a recent enough system
libfreetype ? I probably better ask this on [EMAIL PROTECTED]

So, since we seem to have proper workarounds for previous freetype
incompatibilities in place and - according to HDU - the freetype community got
aware of the problems they cause with breaking binary compatibility, I still
think removing freetype from OOo CVS (and installation set) would be the better
solution - especially since it keeps OOo the door open for system libfreetypes
or replacements with byte hinting enabled.
