You don't have to go so far to find someone who does this: Harvey Wrightman of Ontario recently gave a talk to our NARGS chapter on this technique, complete with a short video demonstration. In our experience it doesn't work in the Pacific Northwest climate, but if it works for Harvey in Ontario, it might be good in the US upper Midwest also. Harvey and his wife, Irene, have created beautiful rock gardens at their nursery and elsewhere. If I may just offer a personal opinion, I think the vertical slab rock gardens are not attractive, even after some years. The unofficial rock garden motto "It will look better with plants on it" notwithstanding. However, I have never been in a part of the world where this type of formation is natural, so perhaps it just looks too strange to me.
