I've heard a lot about Linux on this list, and I've got an older Windows
machine that I could experiment with. What version of Linux should I go with?
Ubuntu, Red Hat, Debian, whatever's on Raspberry Pi, or something else?

Try installing Java 6, first.

Small suggestion;

You might consider dual-booting the machine with linux as a second operating
system. The altus products are written on linux machines.

Then again.....

I'm sorry to say that we have a new PC that I'm hoping to use to do some work

about needing to install Java I get an error saying it can't load NSISdl.dll,
pointing to a temp directory. Any ideas?
