Bdale and Keith can correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the development for the AltOS is done mostly under Debian, so you probably would do well to use a Debian based distribution. For folks new to Linux and want a workstation/laptop type environment, I would usually recommend Ubuntu. Depending on how old your laptop is, you may need something lighter weight than that, but then there are several different strains of Ubuntu each with different requirements and features.

All of that said, I am an old Slackware guy and likely will be to my, or its, grave. But I'm self aware enough to know that it probably isn't the best option for a beginner ;-)

Good luck.
