Hi,
Simon's right and while I do sympathise with anyone who didn't realise that
all this communication is public property, you have to realise that all
electronic communication is.
> Own a car, pay tax, use a credit card, go into town, use a loyalty card, use
> a cash machine, 'they' know what you are doing, where you are, who you are,
> what you like and what you do, IF 'they' could be bothered to find out at
> all that is,
I thought we all knew this in the 90's (Duncan Campbell's writings
http://www.gn.apc.org/duncan/) yet I still despair at the lack of awareness
over the implications of electronic communication.

It is important when taken to a dimension beyond of the archiving this list-
because it is about the currency of information in a knowledge economy and
how the development of communication technologies will affect our actions in
the private, public, local and the Global arena. (though I dont know if it's
relevant to the remit of this list)

Creating projects that investigate the implications of these technologies,
is one way we have a voice in the planning and implementation of them in the
new electronic public domains. This is not about getting web space for
artists it is a more fundamental question, that needs to be addressed at the
policy making level, about human rights - and I hold onto the (perhaps
naive) belief that artists are in a unique position to create spaces where
voices can be heard and, in time, affect policy decisions - though I dont
think thats easy.

Of course it not new to talk about these issues in this arena, i.e. ambits'
readership. I know there are several people on this list whose work is
underpinned by strong social and political concerns and activism but outside
that I felt compelled to say something since I see so many artists getting
involved in the technology arena now who are unaware of the historical and
political context they are working in.

I'm not sure what my point for saying this is - it is just a note in the
margin and an expression of frustration at a lack of political engagement.

I'm sure you all know already;-- but for anyone who doesn't, look at the
writing of Coco Fusco; and Konrad Becker's World-Information.Org
http://world-information.org/wio and Ricardo Dominiguez Electronic Civil
Disobedience (Critical Art Ensemble) http://thehacktivist.com/jed/

Bests,

Alice
