I think that a rethink of where we are is necessary:
Firstly who would such a festival be for? Most of the "new media" practitioners
have a reasonable idea of who each other are. The meeting at CCA was valuable
for putting names to faces, and there will be more events like that presumably.
The problem is that there is no interface with a more public approach. I was
quite surprised that there was no "new media" input around the Glasgow Art Fair
- which could be a thinking point for the future.

Second- the short term memory of arts funders is something that's a problem. I
worked on Fotofeis in 1995 and 1997- which was increasingly bringing new media
works to a wider public in all sorts of venues. New media was featured in a
continuum of media, with performance, photography, live events, and display in
clubs galleries and public. Now there were many reasons why the festival did
not continue- but the multiplicity of forms was a key to its success, coupled
with its ambition and nationwide scope. If there was to be a platform for new
work, it would have to pick up from the consistent failure of the national
level curators and venues to work with both digital and contemporary artists.
Sticking to a new media agenda would preserve the image of a small
self-addressing group. Think large and ambitious...
there's no one to do it for us, just ourselves and allies...

Thirdly, I am increasingly wary of the phrase "New Media" I don't think that
self-definition through our tools is helpful. I still consider myself to be a
lens-based artist at least as much as a computer artist. I am shortly off to do
some land art in Shropshire, and I don't think i'll be calling myself a shovel
artist during the project!
so i think that making definition s to huddle behind is perhaps a sign of
lacking confidence.

finally, am i the only one whose getting a bit tired of the increasingly
prescriptive formula for new media where the correct subject for artwork is the
net itself or code itself, ? It's getting like abstract expressionism where the
only subject was the nature of painting itself... the result an endless series
of bland works .
I'm a bit bored with the idea that there's anyrthing intrinsically subversive
about cutting up code and disrupting hyperlinks. A bigger relation to other art
production and a connection to the public seem a bit more interesting. And with
a bit more room for play, too.

blimey what a lot of words. only wanted to mention the first thing...regards
from Gair
