I know it is a slight divergence from the months theme, but I thought
somehow relevant. John Latham is one of the most important artists this
century whose impact has been subtle and far reaching. Here is some info for
Cavan - also see Variant 14 (I think).
All the best

Latham (b 1921) is an internationally known British artist whose
iconoclastic experimental work executed in a variety of media has repeatedly
provoked debate controversy and misunderstanding. Arguably he is "the last
avant-gardist" a figure comparable to the late Joseph Beuys hence he merits
the same degree of critical attention. Both Beuys and Latham have a utopian
conception of the value of art to society as a whole. Latham's art and
example has inspired several generations of British art students and young
artists. He has participated in such international tendencies as Tachism,
Assemblage, Avant-garde Film/Video, Destruction in Art, Performance and
Installation art, Book and Conceptual art. As one of the founder members of
the Artist Placement Group, Latham has contributed more than most towards a
solution of the artist's separation from the power structures of society.
Latham's highly original cosmological ideas - stressing time and event
rather than space and matter - challenge those of scientists and new
cosmologists. Latham's claim is that his work is the result of a convergence
of art and science and that his holistic inclusive framework is of crucial
importance to the well-being of humanity.
(from web info on John Walkers book)

Artists Placement Group (now Organisation and Imagination, or O + I),
founded during 19621966 by Barbara Steveni and John Latham as a radical
attempt to insert artists as paid employees directly in the workplaces of
factories, institutions and governing bodies. The artist goes into an
organisation to carry out far-reaching dialogue with the organisation's
staff and research into its resources and, in the end, to realise works that
demonstrate this strong level of interaction between art and organisation.
The result of this, they hoped, would influence society directly, to bridge
the gap between artists and people at work so that each may gain from the
other's perspectives and approaches to an activity.
