~Bman,

I can't criticise your motives which are based on concern for your
fellow man/woman.
Frequently it is necessary for leaders to make tough decisions based
on the greater good e.g do we keep every file for ever because one
person might find it interesting some day or do we delete files with
little value to make it easier for, say, 100 new users to research
the collection?

I don't know about others, but my time is like gold to me and I
don't think it is *cool* to rummage around amongst other peoples
junk files.

I have *quickly* read every file in the database and I am confident
in saying that a lot of them are a load of old rubbish.
When I voted I erred on the side of caution and kept the doubtful
files.
I also allowed for a ? vote which indicates I don't know enough
about it to make a firm decision.
?'s can stay as far as I am concerned.

Here are three examples of the types of files we have:

1. years old zipped collection that contains an executable with no
notes or instructions and no reference to a #message.

I don't want to open executables when I don't know what they are
going to do.
The site that it is referenced to i.e. yahoo sometimes changes it's
format.
The file probably doesn't even work anymore.

2. years old .CSV file with no instructions, no column headings, and
no reference to #message.
It appears to be a ticker list.
People are obsessed with stockpiling ticker lists.
Sources of current ticker lists are readily available for download
in various places; the exchanges are one good place to start.

3. sound wave files??????????

There are a gazillion and one sound wave files easily optainable
from the net.

How many of the owners of these files are still active forum members
or even paid up Ami subscribers?
Not one single owner of a file has come forward to say 'My file is
abc123 and this is what it is useful for and it is still current.
Would the forum like me to add some txt instructions?'.
Off course they don't have to do that but it makes me wonder.
If the owners don't have any pride in their own work why would I
place any value on it?

That is just three examples but rest assured I considered every file
carefully and justified my vote to my own conscience.
